We have ordered fancy cakes too. We ordered wegmans a few times and everyone asked us where the cake is from. It's just so good.
We always get either vanilla with cannoli filling or vanilla with chocolate pudding filling. Never tried the other flavors. Also we always get whip cream-the buttercream is gross. I don't just think buttercream is gross there-I think it's gross in general.
Anyone else like a grocery store cake better than fancy cakes? Which one? And what flavors?!
You are tasting the WRONG cakes. Have you had pastries by randolph's chocolate mousse cake? Or bakeshop's red velvet or any other cake? Those blow wegman's out of the park. There really is a vast difference.

I got a “smash cake” from Harris Teeter for my son and box mix would have been better. We like Heidelberg Patty Shop in Arlington. It’s not fancy, but it’s very good. We love Choc mousse cake and Steinway cake.

And Korean. The Asian bakeries tone down the sweetness greatly, which is perfect for me.

Publix cakes are the best! I wish we had Publix around here.
If you're up for a road trip, they just opened a store in Fredericksburg! I drove down last week. That's how much I miss Publix! I got a chicken tender sub and a ton of groceries. I think I'll likely drive down once a month to get my fix.

Then you haven’t had superior quality cakes, OP.
We all have. They aren't good. Give me sheet cake over some designer boutique cake any day.
