We’d eaten, I’d boxed my food while they finished up their desserts. Boxes were there for them to pack their leftover entrees. We were definitely not sitting at an emptied table preparing to leave. They were still engaged in conversation and desserts. That’s the reason it didn’t occur to me they’d be getting up before I returned.

I think you were nuts to leave it. The only person you should be annoyed at is yourself.

I never ever leave my purse in ANY public place, unless DH is there, and then I hand it to him, and he tucks it under his leg until I'm back (mine is small).

“OMG you left my purse?!!?!!” Runs away to get it. Friends fee bad. No one likes to feel bad.

I always stay and watch a friend's purse, or take it with me (if I notice it's there), but I'll also put in a word for the people on the other side of the equation -- I've also been put in the position of having someone in our party stand up and go somewhere, leaving their purse, and then I'm stuck, trying to decide if they're going to be right back, or if I should take it with me? If they come back, and it's not there, will they panic and think it's been stolen? Meanwhile, I'm sitting there thinking about this, and pondering the practicality of walking around with two purses, while everyone else is off having a good time or going to the bathroom or whatever. Unless the entrees have just been served and you explain that you'll be back in a minute and ask them if they mind looking after your purse, it's actually kind of rude to just assume that you can stick your friends with the responsibility for your stuff. If the dinner is over and you just stand up and go the bathroom with no explanation and assume they'll sit there while you're gone? You kind of deserve what you get.
