OP, although terrorism ranks fairly low on the list of things likely to kill you in the US or Europe, I'm not so sure that having your head in the sand like many posters is a good thing. They obviously have a pro-muslim agenda and will downplay any type of Islamic extremist terrorism like ISIS. Apparently they conveniently forgot about the Paris attack in 2015, which was the deadliest terrorist attack in French history. The Bastille Day attack was only a few years ago as well.

Statistically it makes far more sense to worry about men with guns in the US than about terrorism in Europe.

Above advice also applicable to life in the US as well as school setting. And I do agree the threat of random gun violence in US much higher than terror threat in Europe.

You aren’t being silly. It’s wise to be aware of threats and to be prepared without being paranoid. We lived in Europe over several years when there were terror attacks in other countries and periodic threats in the one we lived in.

My advice is to always be aware of your surrounding, pay attention to the location of entrances and exits in public places, and make sure your kids understand that if you tell them to get up and leave or to turn and run that they need to do it and not ask questions.

If something doesn’t feel right, follow your gut. If you feel uncomfortable on a bus or tram or subway just switch cars or hop off and take the next one. If you don’t like something you see on the street hen cross or go another way. If you see a crowd or emergency incident don’t approach to check it out.

Just keep your eyes and ears open and not on your phone and you will be fine.

OP do you worry that your kids will be killed at school?

This is ten times more likely to happen to you than terrorism (in the USA or Europe.) If you can rationalize away the fears of that threat, then I don’t really understand the terrorism fear.

No. I'm from London, and I worry constantly about being caught in an active shooter incident living here in America. Even though I'm far more likely to get run over or killed/injured by some idiot driving and using their phone (why do I see so many people doing that here? Isn't it illegal??)

I find cable news warps people's perceptions of risk.

We spent 2 weeks in Italy and terrorism did cross my mind. Especially where there were armed guards stationed in most of the piazzas and tourist sites. That was intimidating. We did a lot of train travel and waiting for trains in busy train stations in the major cities and it crossed my mind there as well. But statistically my family being in the exact place where something might happen seemed pretty slim and I did not allow the concerns to ruin my vacation.

Each place you listed has a 2 warning level on the State Department website. I wouldn’t have booked travel there. They put warnings out for a reason.

There are way more mass shootings here, so you’re actually safer in Paris.

What good is worrying about it, though? You can’t know when and where a similar event will occur.
