Are those kids AAP?
No, but it’s your loss if you don’t want the suggestions for that reason.
I went to an Ivy League college and I still like the picture book genre as an adult. I don’t censor what my kids read, in either direction. That’s how I think you foster a love of reading.

Nice to hear an honest parent whose child is reading material that's realistic for his age.
+1. My kid is reading Captain Underpants and Dog Man. I just don't believe a rising 3rd grader is enjoying The Odyssey(even in AAP)...at least come up with believeable lies people!
Good for your kid for liking Captain Underpants. Is your kid or experience the measuring stick for the rest of the world? My kid is reading Big Nate, Star Wars, Jurassic World books, The American Pageant, and AP Biology (specifically DNA and Genetics). Why would someone need to lie on an anonymous forum? You are the typical person who wants advantages by trying to make people look like liars.
What advantages are you talking about? No, an 8 year old is not reading Odyssey for funnies. LOL
Why would someone lie on an anonymous forum? Good question. You should ask that person. Sometimes it's trolling. Sometimes they get a kick out of "impressing" other parents.
