Rising second grader, an advanced reader, is reading a lot of schlock from my youth (Microprose Adventures), schlock from his cousin's youth (N.E.R.D.S, Star Wars novelizations), militariana, and things that, with the subtlety of a serpent, I leave in the bathroom for him to find (D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, a child-friendly version of Pilgrim's Progress).

Have heard of Captain Underpants before; this is a good reminder to check it out from the library.

I went to an Ivy League college and I still like the picture book genre as an adult. I don’t censor what my kids read, in either direction. That’s how I think you foster a love of reading.

Ivy League colleges don't impress me. I've seen too many dunces come from those in the workplace. I let my kid read what they want for exactly the reason you list here. I don't suggest books we just browse stores and libraries and whatever catches their eye is what they read.

My kid is reading Big Nate, Star Wars, Jurassic World books, The American Pageant, and AP Biology (specifically DNA and Genetics). Why would someone need to lie on an anonymous forum? Putting down people by not acknowledging or denying what they are doing, essentially makes you look like you're doing what can be done. This in your eyes puts you at a position average or above, when in fact you aren't. Anyway, this much philosophy is out of scope for this topic.

What is your problem? I'm the PP who posted that my kid read the Classic Starts version of the Odyssey. It's a kid version of the book and not at all the same one people read in high school. My kid is really into Percy Jackson and wanted to read some Greek mythology. Considering how many kid versions of the Odyssey are floating around, a lot of kids must be interested in reading it. I don't know why you're so hung up on kids reading kid versions of the Odyssey.

Classic starts books are classics rewritten to about a 4th grade reading level.
