I disagree. I don't wear a lot of jewelry and never have. I value my ring and appreciate the quality, cut and clarity. It's a little less than a carat but stunning (to me) and simple. I don't like what I consider big flashy jewelry or intricate designs. I did not pick out my own ring nor did he confer with friends as they would have told me.

You need better friends.

Do what my husband did. We went ring shopping together, I tried on a bunch of stuff and told him what I liked and didn't like and why, and then he bought a ring. We were clear up front that we were not going to talk about the cost of anything, so it took the pressure off of both of us. We had fun, actually, because it was just about trying stuff on, and I tried on things I didn't think I would even like, and he still got to surprise me.

PP is right on! My DH did this, and as I called various family members from the limosine he had waiting, one asked what my ring looked like. I didn't even realize I didn't have one. I asked him, and with his response, I knew I had the right guy. He said, "you don't think I'd pick out a ring that you will wear the rest of your life without input from you, do you?"

Or, ask her best friend what she wants.

don't ask anyone. most people are not so catty that they want their friends or family members knowing before them. you aren't asking them or her father to marry, you are asking HER.

you do not even need a damn ring to propose and get engaged. that can be a fun shopping trip together later. I find it hilariously stupid when guys postpone proposing in order to plan a trip, agonize over a ring, book a photographer, plan a surprise party. what a bunch of silliness. If that's her thing, go for it, take months and months. For most women it is not. I hate attention.

Well that’s your first problem. Rings can range from 1000 bucks to 100,000. Setting a budget will help to narrow things.

You should definitely ask her friends. Even though she might not wear much jewelry she might have something in mind in particular. I am not that into jewelry but for some reason had my heart set on a rose gold halo split shank ring with a eternity wedding band. There is zero percent chance that my now DH would have known that.
