How old are your future stepkids & how often do they live with their dad/your STBDH? Boys, girls, or both? How old is your niece and about how often do you typically see her/care for her?

As an aunt who was very involved in my niece’s life, I would not budge on this issue. You are getting ready to leave, which is bad enough. But to miss the last birthday together is a non starter. I honestly would end a relationship over that.

Why not just bring your family to their get together since your BF's mom was considerate enough to extend the invitation. You project an awful lot on your niece b/c she's 3 and shy. Stop trying to control everything.
