Opposite in our house. When we got engaged, DH was just starting out as a research assistant and I was in grad school. We got a $250 emerald ring because that was the budget and I loved it. DH always felt bad that I did not get a diamond. Even though I was totally fine with it. He felt like it was something I should have. And he is not an extravagant spender. It left my mind, and I assumed I’d wear the emerald forever. Around our 5th anniversary, we had a windfall, and he was determined that I would get a diamond. Which I did. And it is beautiful. He chose a few and I picked the one I loved. And he felt like he had done the right thing. Which was very important to him. And I wear it every day. I love it because it reminds me what a decent, thoughtful, kind, loving person he is. It somehow has more meaning than something a jewelry store employeee had helped him pick out to propose. But the emerald is still special.

19 years next month, BTW.

I chose a moissanite 1.5 carat in a vintage platinum setting. Very happy with it. My fingers are a little chunky so I went by what looked good (,not big). But I hated the idea of spending 10k on a ring. We have plenty of money, just wasn't a priority...

Mine is two carats as well. It is beautiful. I work with my hands, so I don't wear it too much which is a shame. The ring is perfect for me.
