I'd say there are multiple hurdles to jump over to be successful, but that there is more than one path to take.

Creative thinking isn't enough, if you don't know how to follow-through or are prone to plagues of self-doubt. Confidence isn't enough, if you can't back it up with skills and a knowledge base. And the best teams are going to be multiskilled people with different but complimentary sets of strengths and weaknesses.

Tiger Mom missed the memo on this fact. An education is no guarantee of success in the real world, creativity and soft (people) skills are hugely important, but those are not things you learn in a book.

You are right, but it is not just Asians. I have had white and black parents brag to me about the same thing, as if it is an accomplishment.

I agree with all that, but they are very "prestige" oriented - you have to admit that.

Whites aren't scared of Asians we are just tired of the entitlement and whining. Even white people aren't that bad.

I think this is a label obsession. Some Asian parents want an Ivy Label for their DC, even though they would get a better, cheaper education elsewhere. Which is pretty stupid.

We had to be strategic when coming up with 10 common app schools when my D applied last year. We limited to 2 Ivy Leagues and focused the balance on top SLACs. As anticipated, she met with greater success with SLACs, including with additional scholarships. Several SLACs became cheaper than state schools. There are schools that welcome Asian students - and even will invest in students' education.


Congratulations to you and your D. I think your thought process is sound. But I still feel the Harvard lawsuit is meritless.

What if the schools want some kids who know where commas go?

The tests don't really evaluate that these days. What do colleges do about important areas of academic knowledge not in the tests?


Computers can put commas in the right places, computers can do mathematical computations, computers can retrieve facts, dates, numbers. If that's what your kid is trained to do why bother? It's like training a young artist to paint photo-realistically, like a camera. What's the point? Harvard doesn't need to admit robots, cameras or computers.

Unless there is a movement, nothing will change. Look at the gay rights movement


Game theory. Even if 100% Asians agreed to a boycott, 99.9% of them would then secretly apply. If rejected, they can claim they adhered to the boycott. If accepted, they'd say oh well, my kid's going to HYPS!


Harvard ain't the only game in town. There are other schools. And if UChicago is playing games in anticipation of a lawsuit, then just apply to other schools. Apply to schools that define their success with students' success.

Went to a HS graduation yesterday and valedictorian was a white laid back mellow guy. The salutatorian was an Indian girl.

The Indian went on and on about the honor and hours and hours of studying blah blah blah all big words and quotes from snooty dead white people.

The valedictorian said it is embarasing to be here as not like having a certain grade is an accomplishment. He added every parent in room is 100 times smarter than him as they lived life, married, had kids and raised them. He then said I wasted enough you time thanks.

My daughter said guy is cool, he did not even write a speech could give a shit and does not study much. But he is the most super genius kid anyone every could meet.

He is going to Yale. Oh my and he is white, middle class oh no
