When Nielsen said, "we don't have a policy of separating families" what she meant was that it wasn't a policy that Trump came up with. But that is disingenuous. It may not have been a policy Trump came up with, but it certainly is one that his administration seemed to relish and enforce with "zero tolerance". But it's a good try at spinning.
Here's what happened during the Obama years:
"There were occasionally instances where you would find a separated family — maybe like one every six months to a year — and that was usually because there had been some actual individualized concern that there was a trafficking situation or that the parent wasn’t actually the parent."
Once custody concerns were resolved, "there was pretty immediately reunification," Gilman told NBC News. "There were not 2,000 kids in two months — it’s not the same universe," she added.

The difference? Obama let them all in: "Catch and release". Anyone with a child--parent or pervert--pretty much had a ticket of admission. This is the problem.

Liberals sometimes have a tendency to make claims that aren’t always, ahem, accurate.
So, to clarify, tell us exactly what she said that was a lie.

We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period.
Anytime any Trump admin uses "Period." to emphasize, he/she is lying through the teeth!
They don't. That's Federal law. Trump is fixing it temporarily because Congress won't do their job.
There's that amnesia again...
PP is correct. They do not have a policy of separating families at the border.
I agree with pp. They were following the law.
So, if they didn't have a policy of separating families, then why the EO? I'm still confused.
And Sessions also stated that they were "following the law", and it was Biblical to do so to justify this.
So, again, I'm very confused as to whether the Trump administration agrees that this is the law or policy or not.
I don't think the administration understands what their own policies and laws are. Once again.. it's just chaos.

It was NOT Trump's LAW.

That's because Congress is the one to make laws. Even Obama knew the path to get comprehensive immigration reform done is through Congress. What you are seeing here? This outrage? It's because the Trump administration is no longer practicing catch and release, i.e. they are enforcing the immigration laws on the books.
This is inaccurate. But it certainly sounds nice when you write it like that.
But you won't tell me WHY it's inaccurate. Did Obama practice catch and release? Yes or no? Was he enforcing our country's immigration laws? Yes or no?

Oh yes they do. They even call it “Zero tolerance policy.” Note the word “policy.” Where on earth are you getting your “facts.”
Yes, they do call it that. It's called actually enforcing the law, not practicing catch and release. Those ARE the facts.
Child detainment camps are just an unintended side effect. Oopsie.
What was the excuse for same during the Obama years?
Go talk to Nielsen. She's on the same page as you.

Obama had a bunch of minors dropped into the immigration system unexpectedly. They handled it badly but they didn't intentionally inflict harm on kids, it's difficult for a bureaucracy to take on thousands of kids.
