WOW - thank you! Very good information. If he repeats Spanish 2, I think he loses the HS credit for it. Does that matter much?

Yes they need to take the placement test. Although they administered it to my kid during the first week of school. No language teachers there in the summer .
TJ Spanish is the hardest language at the school. Taught as an immersion class. My kid to Spanish I in MS. Tested at TJ as on the border of Spanish I and II, and they recommmended, but did not require, retaking Spanish I. Like all newbie parents, we said— DC got straight As in MS. A 98 in Spanish I. Is generally brilliant. Why retake? Then reality hit. DC was making a D+ at the end of the first month, based largely not nit having the aural skills. And we had to drop them down from Spanish II to Spanish I.
Moral of the story: TJ knows what they are doing with placement. Put your kid in the class they recommend and the resist the urge to say, “But my kid is too smart to repeat”. And if your kid has two years of standard Ms Spanish, they are likely to recommend Spanish II, not Spanish III. TJ Spanish is significantly ahead of base school Spanish. And Spanish III has a particularly nasty reputation. My DC did FCPS online summer Spanish III to finish the requirement, and had already learned 2/3 of the FCPS Spanish III material in TJ Spanish II.
On the same note, if TJ tells you they recommend math 2.5, rather than math 3, or standard rather than accelerated Foundations of CS, take that seriously.

But it comes a a huge price. 4 years of stress and a mind boggling workload, 1am homework night and night, and no time with family, and a kid so stressed that at times they are sobbing. My TJ kid says they went to school many days with a knot in their stomach.
When DC2 was not offered a spot, I felt terrible. Because it was their dream, and they wanted it for the right reasons (specialized labs and extracurriculars in a strong area of interest). And they were crushed. But I was also relived. I would do for kid 2 what I did for kid 1. But that doesn’t mean I was eager for TJ round 2. Instead, When DC calmed down and got some perspective, we looked at the top colleges in their current area of interest. And saw that every year, the base HS sends kids to these schools. If this kid works as hard at the base HS as they would have to work to stay at TJ, they have a real shot of getting in.
Most kids can get a great education at the base schools, and have a handful go on to Ivy’s, and the top of the class will go to WM, VT, UVA— just like TJ.
I know this probably isn’t comforting. But I have BTDT that with a kid who did not get in. And one who did. And I am not sure the one who did got the better deal. I think DC1 is going to be pretty jealous of a sibling who is not doing an insane commute, and is not studying 24/7 for a lower GPA.
Good luck to your kid next year. They will do great wherever they go.
My son's best friend has an older brother that goes to TJ. Their mom is highly discouraging her youngest to apply. She told me that although the education is incredible, the stress is just not worth it, plus the commute time. She wants her youngest to have a less stressful high school experience.

I (and a couple other friends) made it off the wait-list, and I can't wait to follow my STEM dreams. For those who didn't make it, I wish the best for them at their high school. I heard from a TJ teacher that they we're opening up the equipment for use by any student (as long as it is justified). I believe that they are either making an online service, or just using good ol snail mail. Best of luck to all of you!
