Pretty sure he also had a pretty bad drinking problem and was becoming a temperamental drunk, which is why he and Maddox got into it. He acknowledged the drinking problem in an interview and is supposedly currently on the wagon.

It's the same thing that happened with the Jon & Kate + 8 kids. Maybe they always do that with large family groups to ensure each set of kids gets adequate individual time with the non-primary parent.
