A DP spot is not something for a kid "who can't do DA full-time". Generally a DP will train with the DA team and that will vary per club. In some instances they could train exclusively with the DA team and play games with their clubs NPL or CCL team or whatever. Some DPs may simply get extra training with the DA team which likely means an additional night of practice in addition to the regular team practice.
So depending on your reasons for not being able to do DA full-time, being a DP may not be a solution. Also, a DP should not be asked for if all you want to do is get the training and try it on. It is hard for the clubs to use DP slots appropriately if the player is not intent on making the full DA team. Basically, if DA can't be committed to now what is likely to change over the year to suddenly make it doable to even bother with the hassle of being a DP?
And if you are hoping to play HS soccer and thinking that being a DP will give you the showcase benefits of DA while still playing HS don't count on it. Most clubs will not take DPs to showcases as a matter of practice unless to fill an injury. And if they do, they are not sacrificing a FT players minutes in a showcase for a DP.
