There is so much variation in sizing, even within a single brand sometimes. Gap newborn would definitely fit a 8 lb baby since they run large.

+1. Both my 8lb kids wore newborn diapers for a month and newborn clothes home from the hospital. Wore a lot of too-big 0-3 size stuff because everyone told us not to buy newborn sizes

This. One was 20in and one 22, the former was in nb about 6 weeks, the latter about a month.

I think we used NB diapers with our 9 pounders for a couple weeks.

Another 8lb 3oz baby but we went straight to 0-3 month sizes because DD was tall. Like PPs have said, there's no magic formula. Just don't invest heavily in newborn sizes (get some secondhand NB onesies from the dollar bin or graciously accept what are likely to be pristine NB hand-me-downs) and you'll be ok.

8 pounds, 21 inches, newborn clothes for a couple weeks. Cloth diaper, so can't speak to that.

My baby was 8 pounds 3 oz, and 21 inches and he fit in newborn clothes and diapers for a couple weeks.
