PP 14:11 Find admissions at several schools ill-informed and uncaring about the Basis curriculum in admissions decisions. Basis combining failing AP scores with final grades, lowers GPAs drastically.

Last year at the request of several colleges, BASIS calculated 2 GPAs for each student. One with the AP test scores factored in, and another without. Unlike other schools, there is no way for a BASIS student to prevent college admissions officers from seeing poor Ap scores.

If your child isn't likely to do well on AP exams, for whatever reason, do not send them to BASIS for high school.

Colleges asked for weighted and unweighted GPAs— or colleges asked for the GPA prior to using the AP conversion table?

to PP 10:49 - THANK YOU!!!! From this Basis parent. The talk on this board about being counseled out (ok, yes, actually they do say "Basis is not for everyone" and let the families decide but they do NOT suggest to kids that they should leave the school. In fact I know very well a student who school staff has discussed with the child and the family whether college is something to pursue after high school graduation because they also recognize rightly that college is not for everyone) is nothing I have seen or experienced. I see "chosen" mentioned by posters in threads about Basis and I have no clue what they are talking about (and I have been around since Basis opened in DC). Basis is a good school for my child because if my child decides to attend college (as a 1st generation student no less!) I think DC will be better equipped to handle the course work DC can expect in college because of their time at Basis. I wish all the Basis seniors the best fit for them after graduation and kudos on earning those h.s. diplomas!!

This is why BASIS serves best the interest of the few chosen ones who are Acing the AP's and getting very high GPA's -- something which would not have been possible had they attended any other school.

My kid is struggling at BASIS in 7th; not passing 2 classes, and getting a D in another despite doing well in 5th and 6th. We've spent LOTS of time with teachers and administrators, and no one has counseled us out, or mentioned college but we are leaving of our own accord.

It's clear to us that this child, while bright, is simply not ready not interested in such an accelerated course load. Which is fine. There was no way to know that before we got there. The child's sibling is doing great in BASIS' high school. Different kids, different needs and interests.

BASIS hasn't released a final acceptance list.

They have shared the total merit aid received by this year's graduating seniors -- $3.145 million for 15 students (14 seniors and one early graduate).

Exactly, this is their platform. They boast about their superior level of education that prepares the surviving students for Ivies. So I am not sure why they are being mum.

Ugh so tired of this east coast obsession with Ivies. There are some incredible schools throughout the U.S. We have a kid in middle school at Basis, and nobody says one word about preparing for Ivies. That is not the message given to parents and students at all. What they do focus on is preparing for the work that you want to do and ultimately finding your individual interests and strengths, and the right college for you (and your family situation). I have no idea of the finances of the graduating seniors' families, but I can tell you overall this is not a school full of people with trust funds and super high incomes who don't have a single care about how to finance an education. Far from it. If a child's educational needs and interests are best served at an Ivy, and either the family can afford it or they get merit and financial aid to make it happen, then great. But there are many great universities, and lots of practical aspects to a college decision.

I really dislike how people pick apart college choices for all the different schools' graduating seniors in this area. If you are comparing schools with ultra rich parents and legacy connections, that's one thing. But come on, people, most kids and families aren't in that situation, believe it or not. They are applying for scholarships and other financial aid and doing the best they can to make something work, hopefully at a college that will match their kid's interests. In fact, a kid may even be the first one in their family to attend college, so let's celebrate that.

Maybe because they don't care what you think? Maybe the graduating seniors and their families don't need haters yammering on about whether their results were good enough in your eyes?

Yes and it is marked as such. A PP (11:29) asked that someone post the 2017 list.

Also two students are currently attending Bowie State, one is at Morgan State, one is attending UDC, one is at Montgomery College, One is at University of Maine. Students were advised to apply to to at least 15 SLACs and a couple state schools.
