This! My roommate and I were very different, but always glad I didn't take the easy route. By the time, I pulled a high school best friend into my dorm as a sophomore we both had a wide circle of new friends, which meant more fun for everyone.
So far both of my sons have gone the random route. And they've both found two pretty good friends in their roommates? Plus learned they have the flexibility to go into an unfamiliar situation, on their own, and make it work.
