I learned to speak passable German, both to tour around and explore the towns and cities my family emigrated from in the 1870s (in Baden-Württemberg) as well as to go to Oktoberfest with some old friends.

Absolutely! I cannot say how much good this has done for me.

I learned modeling of moving magnetic object/anomalies and because an expert in in the field of moving magnetic anomaly detection and determining the source magnetism. (orientation and strength of the magnetic dipole).

I am now truly a MAD scientist (that is my job title)

-the ability to discern which one of my teenagers is creeping through the house based on the sound of their footsteps,

-the ability to prepare delicious, creative, and exotic meals that our whole family will eat,

I'm not an empty nester yet (in the midst of teenagers) but I camped for the first time last year--for a week, in a tent and sleeping bag, and hiked during the day. I went with my DD and a group, so if something went wrong, they could help us. ...was such a great experience!

I stopped my hopeless attempts to learn Spanish, which would be a great functional language for where I live, and went back to French, because I discovered that if one sucks at foreign language, they can still unbury that language they learned in high school that is jammed deep in the brain. Doing Duolingo at home on my mac (not the app) and Behind the Wheel French in the car, then will do some Rosetta Stone, then plan to take a class. Then of course...go to France in a few years...

I just took an incredible class on learning to shoot a handgun (all about being responsible, safe, and purely defensive--not a gun-nut class). Taught by SWAT guys.

I had been a stained glass artist for years, but I added in kiln work and many other different skills taking my work a whole new direction

I also learned to like things that I hadn't previously, like the beach and some TV shows (used to hate to watch TV and still don't daily. But it can be relaxing to watch sometimes)

I learned how to roller blade and also mountain biking, on difficult trails, in my mid-40s. I am now in my 60s and don't do either, but if I can lose some weight I will try both again. I am currently not fit enough to do either safely.

52 year old empty nester. I was a fitness trainer, group exercise instructor, and martial arts instructor when I was younger. I got recertified and started personal training and teaching again. I also spent the last three years learning Reiki and have a small Reiki business. It's mostly just fun money. But I enjoy it. DH retires in two years. Our retirement home is on the 9th hole of a beautiful golf course. I'm going to learn to play golf next!
