I wear my prestigious college sweats at home for a lazy day or i might wear the sweatshirt for errands or a dog walk if I forget to change. I admit that I do feel self conscious wearing it out and about, partly because of the fancy school name but also partly because sweats in general seem sloppy.

I'm mostly worried about people thinking that I'm an old money snob, and then my self consciousness sends me into that whole "yes I went to that school, but I was on scholarship, blah blah blah," when I know deep inside that no one worthwhile would care one way or another.

In general, it would be wasteful to throw away good comfy clothes just to replace them with no name ones. I'll wait till they wear out, which may take a while since they don't get much use.

On the flip side, it's fun to run into people, generally recent grads, much older alumni, or proud parents of current students, who are decked out. It's a nice entree into a conversion with a person i wouldn't have meet otherwise.

Mine has my graduation year on it. After 25 yrs, it's the softest sweatshirt I own. When it's cold out and I want something warm and comfortable, I put it on.

Then if I find myself out running errands, you might see it on me. Oh well.

No, it is not obnoxious and anybody who thinks it is just needs to get over their own insecurities.

I don’t understand people who wear vacation gear for a ski resort or beach town they went to once. College makes sense to me - you spent 4 years there. Vacation gear makes sense to me if you have a house there or have been going to the same place every year forever and it is part of your family’s culture / collective memories.

My kids always want to buy souvenir hats and sweatshirts from any random beach town we might spend a weekend at. I get why it seems strange, but they view that stuff as souvenirs to remind them of a fun weekend. It's usually only about $10-15, and more useful than a snowglobe or refrigerator magnet, so I don't fight it. Maybe that will help you understand.

I am not judging your kid. I am judging my mom who went to a Bar Harbor once for a long weekend and is wearing her fleece and using it to strike up conversations in the grocery check out line 10 years later. It was not purchased due to unexpected weather. For some reason that is different to me than my inlaws who wear shirts and jackets with the logo of a popular western ski resort because they own a timeshare there and have been skiing there 2-3 weeks a year since the 1980s. It’s a big enough part of their family that some of my husband’s siblings got married there - hence actual family history and connection. So when someone randomly asks you if n public about the place on your shirt, so you have something interesting or meaningful to say. My mom doesn’t even know anyone who lives in Maine.

Unless it was an anomaly
and the school was playing that day in a known tournament.
Same for anyone way out of college
BUT when a school is known for rah-rah sports -Ivy's are not- and it's not quite as odd.

What an idiotic opinion. An alum spent four years and has an affiliation with their alma mater and that's sad? Yet some fan who has nothing to do with a sports team runs around in their gear and that's better? How inane.

Why would it be obnoxious? Silly question.

HA. This whole thing makes me laugh. I went to nowhere state u. I would have never worn that stuff. Now, if I had gotten into an Ivy like my kid, I would wear it. I'd be proud.

I went to Harvard and don't wear any gear because ... it feels attention-seeking and potentially off-putting. Also never had bumper stickers on parents' cars.

Also never once dressed kids/babies in Harvard class of 20?? gear. I thought it was super weird and obnoxious when friends did.

I attended four universities, two Ivy and two state. I have and wear stuff from all four.

I'm not sure how anyone could argue with this completely reasonable response.

I'm wearing the hat AND the sweatshirt when I go to a game to watch our admittedly terrible football team.

If you're at an actual sporting event where the team is playing, I think there are practically no limits. But if you're just walking your dog at the dog park, probably just pick one item.
