Yes, I think I am right (and that the research is right) that spanking is detrimental to development. But I would not say everyone who spanks is vile--that comes down to plain bigotry.
I would also say that some of these friends who believe in spanking are, on a daily basis, far more gentle in their interactions with their children than some other people who are against spanking. To call ALL spanking "abuse" is ridiculous. Some people are trying to use it judiciously as a parenting tool, and that is not abuse. Some people who would never spank drag their kids around by the arm or yell at them to the point that the kids are frightened. That is more abusive and damaging than an occasional smack on the behind.
You are making far too much sense and being way too reasonable for these people.

The vast majority of parents spank. It's not "redneck", it's universal.
Stop with the same ridiculous statement, PP - you have been repeating it ad nauseam and it is simply not true. It is redneck and not universal.
Why are you so defensive about hitting your children anyway, PP? you have been on this forum all weekend defending your cruelty so clearly you know you are doing something very wrong.
The UT article says that 80% of parents worldwide spank, and in various studies, 80-95% of parents in the US spank.
I haven't posted anything about spanking at all lately, aside from this thread.

Spanking makes sneaky children.
Same, but my mom never did the dirty work. She would have my dad do it when he got home. But it definitely taught me to keep things from her and that's still true today.

Same here. Learned to behave when she was looking and to never tell her anything. When I turned 15 I was as tall as her and started hitting her back. Younger siblings were grateful.
