It can't quite be so simple. There are only so many kids (and that's actually decreasing) and there are a certain amount of spots. In the end, each kid goes to one spot. VT can't just get more selective, or more kids will turn them down. Their place in the heirarchy is unchanged. What is true is that things are more random, but not clearly more selective.

It'll be interesting to see how big their waitlist is. Interesting to see if they reject the tippy top kids assuming it's a safety for them. Interesting if showing interest has become a major factor.
That's exactly what my Dh and I were discussing last night--maybe our more "mediocre" kid actually has a better chance of acceptance than a kid that's already HYPSM bound.
I don't know what you think "Mediocre" is, but I've found the SCHEVE statistics to be very helpful. Go here and plug in Virginia Tech and you will get the GPA for students who actually enrolled in 2017-2018 (and SAT scores). For the 6393 enrolled students, 25th percentile had a 4.21 or better; the median was 4.00; and the lowest 25th percentile was 3.78. Good luck! http://research.schev.edu/enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp

I think the letter to the counselors is their way of saying that it isn't just the kids at one particular school, so don't feel singled out. The standards are tougher this year.
- Common App
- Students chasing money = applying to more schools
- Fear of missing out = applying to more schools
- Don't know what they want to do = applying to more schools
- Bragging rights = applying to more schools
Bottom line: There aren't more students, overall, nor are the students smarter. The number of applications per student has probably gone way up, though, for the reasons listed above.
