OP here. Fully clothed. My kid went for an EAr nose and throat problem. The appointment was over. My
Child had not fussed. How does touching someone on the butt calm them down? Strange line of thinking there.

Nope. The appointment was over. My kid was upbeat. The appointment had nothing to do with that.

Look what happened with all those who were in contact was Larry Nassar. If it made you uncomfortable OP report it to the practice manager/doctor. If the nurse loses their job oh well.

Yeah peds and per nurses can sometimes be talkative or playful with elementary kids to put them at ease. And they also have sex abuse training to know what not to do. Guaranteed patting a 2nd grader on the butt is not acceptable friendliness. Acceptable friendliness by that age is more taking to the kids about school, sports teams etc not touching and certainly comforting touches go on the arms/shoulder not the butt!

I think context is important here.

Is this male nurse a jokester who is trying to put the patient at ease with him? (OP mom said she took it like he was trying to be funny, so was her son a little nervous and this might have been something the nurse thought would make him laugh?) It's a little weird...but weird enough to be "inappropriate?" I dunno.

t was unclear from the OP whether the 7-year-old was fully clothed or not, and I realized this totally affects whether I think this is a thing or not. If fully clothed, you could maybe even argue that he was going for his leg or back, but not necessarily his backside with the tap...and it just ended up that way. If not clothed or only wearing underwear I would call the nurse manager and express my discomfort.
