Which is why he was so matter-of-fact at the After-the-final-rose when he referenced the final result.

Shouldn't he have proposed to Lauren though? He made such a big deal about finding a wife and being engaged at the end of this.
Reality Steve is reporting that this happened last weekend or the weekend before. Arie and Lauren went to California and he proposed at a hotel overlooking the water.

Reality Steve says it's a done deal that Becca will the the Bachelorette. He said something to the effect that they've already filmed the intro to this in Minnesota.

I think when he proposed to Becca and started being IN a relationship with someone who was planning a future (i.e. a fiance), he couldn't really commit (although he had already committed to the engagement). Becca was full steam ahead, (I suspect) and Arie was like hmmmm... where are the cameras... this isn't fun anymore. Then he contacted Ms. Play It Cool and found out that she was still interested and decided he could jump ship on Becca. If Lauren hadn't been an alternative for him, he probably would have stayed with Becca awhile longer and then called it off like all the rest (except Sean).
The spotlight can be very addicting for some. He got swept away by the concept of being the guy who gets married... but he doesn't like what that entails.
