F & M is not for the average student. James Madison is only possible if you're in top 1/3 - 1/2 of your all-college-bound FCPS class.

VCU and James Madison are good options if you are in VA. Different vibes, but we were impressed by both when we visited.

Franklin and Marshall if you want a small school and can afford it.

LOL. It is definitely up and coming but to one of the top schools and not average at all. It used to be around top 100 a few years back it has moved up gradually and I think this year it was #42 in the country. Nothing average at all. The school is beautiful too.

+1

DD with 4.0 GPA and 1480 SATs did not get in (along with lots of other kids in the early rounds with similar stats).

Northeastern used to be a crappy commuter school but has rapidly risen in the rankings. There was a good article in the NYT about how they gamed the rankings but it is what it is.....definitely not a safety anymore.

You're going to have to provide GPA and SAT/ACT scores; otherwise, the term "average" on DCUM means someone who isn't a shoe-in for a top 25 school.

Average being 3.5 GPA (3.8 WGPA) and SAT's in the 1200-1250 range.

So that's above-average by national and local standards, but average by DCUM standards.

It will get a kid into plenty of good schools - as for which ones might be considered "up and coming," I'd tend to think Pitt and Delaware (both are well-known but perhaps becoming more popular with DMV students).

As for smaller schools, maybe College of Wooster?

Lots of kids from our Pittsburgh area high school go to Temple and OU and seem very happy.

To a pp: Is Bucknell really for "average" kids?

"Avg. WGPA - 4.43"

I suspect this WGPA is the highest possible score Clemson can report and is kind of cherry picked.

I doubt Clemson early action admits, who don't have the benefit of more AP/IB classes as seniors, manage this WGPA with only an 1310 ave SAT.
