Looking at Marriott properties, there a couple in Old Town which is why I asked.

Old Town will entertain you for one day. I wouldn't want to stay there. Go to San Diego and stay on the beach. The water will be cold but playing in the sand and listening to the waves willl be worth it.

How about Old Town San Diego? any feedback?

La Jolla all the way.

Carlsbad is also nice but it'll be a pain to drive down to San Diego proper depending upon where you're headed. Mission Beach is very central but much busier.

Little Italy gets my vote, or La Jolla. The beach towns are all just a bit shabby.

Agree with pp re: mission beach.

My recommendation - Mission Beach and rent a condo or house.

Coronado is nice but I found it a pain to drive back and forth over the bridge to get to activities. If you want resort and beach only this could be an option.

We have also stayed at a chain in La Jolla but as PP mentioned, the chain hotels there aren’t in the cute charming town part near the beach. But if you are using points, this isn’t a bad option (just be prepared that you aren’t staying somewhere harming)

Downtown is pretty small so gaslight, marina all pretty close together. We liked staying here also.

Have been to sand diego many times and love it.

Sea world, zoo, safari park, legoland.... hiking in Torrey Pines....Ocean institute at Dana point and scripps acquarium. Del Mar. Last time we were there my son and I did a dog at the ocean view mine which was a lot of fun if you like rocks. And of course beach everywhere.

We love Coronado too and the kids will love the ferry to downtown SD. We loved LaJolla too. We stayed in some spa out there ...that I think started with an "E"...can't remember the name

I’m also considering San Diego but I’m not sure where to stay. We plan on visiting sites in San Diego and also Legoland. Don’t plan on spending much time in the hotel.

La Jolla! Lived in San Diego for 10 years

We rented a house in Pacific beach which was great with kids. Easily drive or sometimes walked to the beach, grocery store down the street, easy drive to all the touristy things. We did a tourist activity every morning and beach every afternoon. Easy to park except a little trickier on the weekend.

Stayed in Gaslamp recently for work and can confirm it is NOT where you want to be with young kids. Is your intent to do stuff in SD proper (Padres game, Balboa Park), or in the general area (Legoland)? If you were planning on doing some driving anyway, the smaller beach towns north of the city are much nicer IMHO - La Jolla, Encinitas, Carlsbad.

We loved our stay at the Empress in La Jolla. Lots to walk to - restaurants, shops, the cove, trails along the ocean. Very beautiful and peaceful area. We also enjoyed Solana Beach, but can't remember the name of the hotel but think it might have been a Marriott Courtyard.

San Diego is gorgeous and you'll have a great trip!
