I went to Target to return LEGO DS received for his birthday. For 2 of them I had gift receipts but for the 3rd the receipt I had wasn't a match. I said to the guy "Oh, I guess they didn't buy it here." He said "Let me scan it. If we sell it I can take it and give you a gift card for it."
They carried it. I got a gift card. As far as I can tell Target is still thriving as a retailer.

Sure but it’s deceitful, taking advantage because you’re lazy, and it messes up Target’s inventory. They may be able to sell them in that size, but they didn’t order them in that size. This might seem innocuous, but imagine if many people tried to do this on a daily basis. It’s no longer “no big deal.”
Target wouldn't take them if it messed up their inventory. And it isn't deceitful. I'm not going into the baby aisle and leaving one box and taking another. Once they scan everything in its even Stephens. I'll probably end up paying more because I got these diapers with subscribe and save
You can’t tell that it is deceitful because YOU DIDN’T buy them there? Why does Target owe you a free return service using their time, effort, and stock? This is an appalling attitude.
I really feel like this is a truly victimless crime. Target will put the box back on it's shelves. This is nothing like the link pp posted. I assure you I am not trying to exchange used diapers. It is a factory sealed box that has no damage. This is not a dress I wore without taking the tags off.
No one has really been able to ar ticulate to me the harm target would suffer. I have called the store and they said they have special barcodes so I'm going to end up just going to the ups store today but the only thing that would have happened to target as a result of this is me buying 150 bucks worth of other stuff while I was there.

You didn't buy them from Target, you bought them from Amazon. Do you typically return things to totally random stores that weren't the original point of purchase? People actually try to do this?
+1
Yes I purchased diapers from Amazon in the wrong size and would like to solve the problem easily today by going to target (which i already have to do) where they sell this exact product and swapping it for the correct size. No one is getting hurt in this scheme and I don't know what is so baffling about it. I'm just being lazy not wanting to deal with shipping them back to Amazon, who I know yes will take them back without issue.
I don't typically do this but clearly not the only person who thought of it.
