As long as possible. My 2008 Sienna still runs beautifully and is close to 200,000 miles!

My most recent two cars were 15 years and 9-10 years. Now I buy high quality used cars and hope to keep them 7-10 years.

I have a 2006 Honda with 80k miles. No plans to get rid of it

We did just get a new car to replace a non-Honda that was crapping out at 8 years. The new car is the one we will take longer distances.

Anonymous wrote:I'd say it's not just year, but mileage. I am still driving a 16 year old Honda. But it has super low mileage, 112k since a lot of that time we were in the city and taking metro or walking everywhere.

It could easily make it until 20 years most likely.

But I have a friend who drives all over the state for work and her 2010 Acura is about to die. However, she has 180K miles on it.

It's also a mileage question for me. I replaced my last car at 11 years, but it had 175k miles on it and lots of issues - it was getting scary to drive, I knew that I was looking at thousands in repairs, and it just wasn't worth it. My 2008 RAV4 has 133k miles on it, and I'm hoping for at least 3-4 more years (currently driving ~13k/year) before replacement. However, my husband is also a 'car guy' (as another poster mentioned), so he switches cars every 3-5 years.

Most of my friends seem to hold onto their cars for 15-20 years, but they're also lower mileage drivers than I am....I doubt that any of them have more than 100k miles on 12-15 year old cars.

We do also have a small 2012 SUV. Which we'll probably be driving until 2030.

We still drive our 1998 Ford!

When they cost more to repair than a note. We will replace my 12 year old car soon. Its too costly to maintain. We have an 19 year old going strong that we've barely put money into. I like 10-15 years, prefer longer. I do want a new car now with the cameras and safety features.
