It's stopping and starting that kills motors. Running continuously is easier on them.

Huh - that doesn't even make sense - is that based on any experience or do you have any evidence?

High efficiency furnaces are mostly that way by design (they vent air horizontally rather than vertically) so why would they be less reliable.

As I wrote last week ours in 13 years old and we've had not a single service call on the system and it has worked great and saved us money as promised.

Try and imagine anything today lasting 6 decades.

That's survivor bias. You don't know how many of the furnaces installed in 1958 made it past five years.

For the most part things being manufactured today are much better made than 60 years ago.
