I know one Duke grad who acted shocked last year when a mutual friend’s son picked Columbia over Duke. Seriously! Duke is a great school but not quite in the same league as Columbia. Durham vs. NYC? Is this even a question for anyone except Duke grads?

Those schools are lower ivies. Nobody has a chip on their shoulder about them.

Oh please, like Duke has no chip about Penn or Columbia?! They are schools with much better departments overall, bigger names, an ivy league brand, higher endowment and higher desirability (as shown through RD yield). Get real. Maybe they are less insecure towards Brown, Dartmouth and Cornell though. But still these are ivies and Duke is not an ivy.

I know for a fact that Dukies love to trash talk Penn and Columbia. Cant imagine it is that much different for the other non-HYP ivies.

Kind of misleading statement. Most smart rich preppy kids from the coasts do not have Duke as their first or even second choice. Still it is true that Duke is on the college list of many of these kids, usually below a number of ivies, Stanford.

Not just the coasts. I went to a Midwest day school full of millionaire kids who were obsessed with Duke.

BS no one is obsessed with Duke, maybe apart from some preppy southern kids. For most rich, preppy and qualified kids on the northeast, west coast and midwest, Duke is an afterthought to most of the ivies and Stanford.

U know the bitch set them up?

Of course. I'm more concerned with the horrid behavior of the Gang of 88 (faculty) ruining the reputations of the young men.

Duke grad here, literally have never heard any such trash talk. I don’t think we care about academics that much.

Durham is a pit and Duke is basically the Rutgers of the South.

presumably his tower office will just be abandoned because no one will be able to use the thumbprint elevator, but the legend of an Iron Dukes Development Intern who got trapped up there and has since gone insane will live on...

Look at the comparables in terms of academic quality and selectivity. It's easy to see why some students would choose Duke over Brown, Penn, Dartmouth, Chicago, etc.

I went to HS and was very close friends with a girl who went to Duke and (and then an Ivy for Law). She became an Assistant District Attorney in Chicago.
You could do that from anywhere.
Except she did it from Duke and an ivy.

Durham is a lovely city to live in. Duke isn't that big but UNC and State are just down the road, so there's plenty of student-oriented culture. Duke has some of the best kids in the country and some of the worst. It's probably not that different from similar schools. The campus is pretty (most of it). It rarely gets cold and the spring and fall are delightful.

Vanderbilt, Emory, Tulane, Washington & Lee...

Maybe you meant there's no other rich, preppy private school in the south so popular with those from other parts of the country.

+1. It's a school for Northerners.
