I'm 36 and DH is 41 and we have about 600K combined, plus he has a pension that I feel pretty comfortable will still exist when the time comes.

110k and 90k. We’re both 39. Late start due to over 400,000 in law school loans to pay off. We didn’t do any investing in out 401ks while paying down the loans.

You need to start an IRA. Anyone can do it, and deduct up to $5.5k contribution from taxable income (6.5 if over 50). Or a Roth IRA which is after tax.

$0. Help me. Never had a job that offers one, and I've worked really hard. 12 hour shifts with no breaks. This - work hard and you'll make it in America is bull. Lots of jobs that take your health don't offer benefits.

170k, 39 years old. i've only been contributing for 5 years. DW has close to 400k in hers (38 y.o.)
i just became a partner in biglaw and have a $2600/mo mandatory contribution into a Keogh plan, so between that and my 401(k), i'll be socking away almost $50k/year into retirement accounts.

For those who feel they're behind at 40, there's hope. I had $200K in retirement at that age, and was worried as to whether I could ever accumulate enough to retire. Now it is almost 20 years later, and despite the intervening recession, I have $600k in my retirement account(s) and paid off the remainder of the mortgage on my $600k house. So, from a net worth of $300k at 40 (including home equity) to $1.2 million at 59. (Single.)
