Second a recommendation of Geraldine Brooks. Year of Wonders is about the plague in Europe — wonderful! And Jacobs Crossing was about Native Americans being educated at Harvard in Colonial Times. Fabulous.

Op here, I love a thread that keeps going (and includes some books my wife has read/enjoyed). Of all the aspects of our marriage, book selection for the other has never clicked

I'm not going to all the responses but I LOVED The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. I'm actually a big fan of all of her books, but The Nightingale was truly special and is getting tons of praise all over the internet.
