It is unfortunate that they do not do count day 2 times a year to evaluate # of students enrolled in DCPS vs charter

I was in the office at Deal last week and they were enrolling a student transferring from a charter. It sounded as if she was not the only student recently enrolling based on the conversation.

They’re putting fingers in the dike while trying to figure out something to entice OOB families to stay closer to home.

Dual language at MacFarland and Roosevelt HS, the new application high school within Coolidge. Ron Brown HS, more students at Ellington.

But it takes time to launch these things if they have any hope of getting it right. And for now they’ve been able to make it work.

They will almost certainly still find a way to have a significant OOB population. Wilson is by far DC's best performing high school. It will be politically untenable for it to become virtually exclusively rich and almost entirely white. It seems like some who have moved into UNW recently do not understand where the political power base in this city resides. While demographics in the city are changing, it will be a very long time before, if ever, city hall is focused on the concerns of UNW/the DCUM crowd over other segments of the city.

Again, I ask: How will they do this if the school is overcrowded by IB kids alone? Just saying "they will almost certainly still find a way" is not an answer. It's a lazy cop-out. DCPS needs the foresight to start thinking of tangible solutions now, not after it becomes a massive problem.

Will they build more schools? This would be the most logical answer, but it will never happen because of a million reasons.

Will they start cutting those Ward 4 neighborhoods out of the Deal/Wilson feeder? They should, because of mere geography.

Would they consider cutting Lafayette out of the Deal feeder and thus Wilson? They might have to, if the goal is to keep Deal and Wilson stocked with OOB students.

They will redraw the lines dramatically when that happens. But until then this will continue happening.

This is pretty clearly the manifestation of the DCPS strategic plan; excellence & equity.

Right, because they all end up at Wilson.

I'm sure DCPS truly believes some will choose the brand new early college application high school that will be at Coolidge over Wilson. AP classes in 9th and 10th, and dual enrollment for 11th and 12th.

What could possibly go wrong?
