By virtue of her position, this principal had access to the chancellor, asked a favor, and the result was something no other citizen got. That seat could have gone to any number of needier or more deserving kids. DC principals make over $150 grand a year. Go rent an apt in Nw if you want to attend Wilson

The school is overcrowded. If Martin's kid hadn't gotten in, no one else would have. Her kid was accepted at SWW, but wanted to play football. He could have clearly gone to any other comprehensive high school as an OOB student.
The email traffic in the IG report makes it clear that Kaya Henderson and Nathaniel Beers knew full well that this looked bad, but thought there was a low chance of it becoming public knowledge.
As for teacher preference, there are 4100 teachers in DCPS. There's not room for them all to get exceptions.

I actually find it off putting that staff members can’t bring their children to their school (obviously if they live within dc). I taught in another state in a huge school system and principals could sign off on family members to come to their school. It felt like a family school and it helped with building bridges to the community.
Someone will probably tell me I’m wrong but it made it nice for families and nice for the community members to see the buy in from staff and that their families came to that school.

Page 10-12 of the OIG report describes the school principal who asked for a placement. On page 11, it describes this exchange:
"On August 3, 2015, at 1:15PM, a DCPS official responded to Chancellor Henderson and Dr. Beers, stating:
This came to my attention Saturday and I completely agree - he should be able to go to Wilson. The only downside is that we have been strict about who goes to Wilson due to them being over their enrollment. One student, the principal's son, shouldn't make this an issue."
