I loved where I went to college. But there are schools I wish I applied to. If you saw the list of places I applied, it is super random and it leaves off a lot of places I probably would have loved.

No, turned down the huge high-prestige state university for a smaller state university that was more focused on undergraduate education. Had a great education, good faculty relationships, lots of interesting projects. Came out of school with a great resume just based on the experience I got through my classes and had no difficulty finding a job doing exactly what I wanted to do.

Haha, my parents actively opposed me applying to california schools because earthquakes.

Yeah, Stanford I think would have been good fit, and I probably would have gotten in (total humblebrag, but with my hooks and school i did attend seems likely)

Anonymous wrote:Yes. I went to a Top 10 private university. Wish I would have gone to a lower-ranked school, or a state school. I wanted to be a doctor, and I see on FB etc. that many of my high school classmates who went to Easy U are doctors now while I barely passed freshman year and ended up with a so-so job. I'm glad for the education and I'm glad I am more well-rounded because I was pretty backwards, but we are taking a good look at state schools for our kids esp because kids around here are much more cosmopolitan than we were.

Almost same story. When you come from middling HS and backwards middle class into an elite college, it tanks your GPA unless you are truly truly exceptional, versus going to state university which would be a much easier transition in so many ways (academically, socially, financially). Though I ended up doing what I wanted but I could have easily taken same path from state university bc it wasnt doctor/banker/lawyer route.

Would you have applied to Stanford if you had known about it?

I would have aspired to it, sure. But college applications were so much easier then.

State U out-of-state can be the best! No HS friends, but a great time to grow.
