high SES parts of the DC area skew towards older parents (who put off childrearing to establish their careers, etc). so, you may be on the younger side here but quite the opposite in other parts of the country.

still, you're hardly a unicorn around here. plenty of people have kids in their early 30s and late 20s. if people comment on your age, they probably think you look younger than you are!

I'm almost 40 and DH almost 48, and we have a preschooler (4.5). DH will turn 60 when she's 17.

It really is noticeable at her preschool, where we are NOT among the oldest parents-- I am actually probably within the younger third of moms. Between this year and last, I can't say there were any moms under 30, maybe 5-10% were even under 35. Most moms late 30s to late 40s, which means they will be about 50-60 when their kids are graduating. We have SEVERAL dads in their 50s and 60s NOW, with 2-5-year-olds.

This is DC proper, not wealthy, but a certain demographic. The DC area in general (and I grew up in upper MoCo) is much more highly educated than average America. No snobbery, there's just a strong correlation between higher ed and later kids. What's BS is then making assumptions about young-- and worse, young-looking-- parents.

I am in my mid 40s. This is so awkward, I am told I look younger, but I thought that is just small talk. I am not imagining it either, I thought it is bcs I am an immigrant, and that might have something to do with it, but the age thing I just found out. I think I am an older mom, and they think I am a spring chicken. Is this the norm here? I don't really care to fit, but I am curious about the age thing.

You are just noticing this now??? I noticed that I was way younger when I walked into kindergarten.

We lived overseas for a long while before moving here.

I am 57 and DH is 65, our now fifteen year old is happily away from her senior citizen parents at boarding school. Most of her friends grandparents are younger than my DH.

My kids have friends with parents 15 years older than me and others that are 10 years younger than me. It really doesn't seem to matter. We are all going thru the same stuff with our kids right now so the age thing doesn't seem to make a difference.

It never occurs to me to wonder how old other parents are. OP, nobody cares how old or young you are.

Anonymous wrote:OP here. thank you for all the replies. So, it is not that usual for this area after all? I actually think some older parents than me seem to have more energy and are really into lunches and dinners and sport events for their teens. I think maybe sometimes people don't actually really look at other people and might get the impression that I am younger, I have my dark hair natural, few grays, but unnoticeable. (and just on dcum I will admit that I had botox done last summer)Though, if they do think I am younger, I honestly don't feel like I am or look younger. Most of the days, I barely have enough energy to go to these sport events and dinners. But, since there are so many of these, it would be nice if I kind of had a few parents to gravitate to. They certainly are very involved but in a good way. They are all very nice and polite, but not chatty with me. BTW, I am not a grouchy, negative European type at all. I actually dislike those exact behaviors when I go back for a visit. But, anyway, this was more me putting my thoughts on "paper" here, so to say.

I am one of the PP's who is over 50 with a young child. I just want you to know that I am always happy to talk to people and enjoy meeting other parents at games and dinners and events. However, in addition to the young child you know, I have a full-time job, I am a "sandwich" with elderly parents and kids, and we have kids in college. It is all I can do right now to keep my balls in the air and not drop any. So don't think that I'm not inviting you to lunch because I don't like you. I'm not inviting you to lunch because I don't have time to eat lunch. Talk to me in 10 years.
