I would hate to see the students and parents of the Edison based kids move out of SEES. They are a very active and valued part of the SEES community. In some ways the are the most active parts perhaps b/c they are geographically closer they seem to attend and run more things than parents from the Hayfield pyramid. SEES seems to be more a part of the Franconia community as it is on Franconia Rd.

I do think SEES will have a void if those parents and kids move out.

But, I understand too, if the number of kids is large enough year after year -- it would make sense to have another center.

Although, that begs the question whether a new center (or even a local level 4) should go to a school in Edison's zone or in Hayfield's zone. Edison elementary schools are already geographically closer to SEES than the Hayfield elem. schools. And Edison pyramid already has two local level 4s + an immersion elementary school. As mentioned in another post, Hayfield has no level 4s, no immersion, and functionally speaking -- no center (since the majority of the kids at Lorton Station are South County kids). Edison has the AAP middle school. Hayfield doesn't have an AAP middle school either. Seems only fair that if Edision pyramid has the AAP middle school center, then maybe Hayfield pyramid should at least have an elementary center that a majority of the AAP-eligible kids can attend within their own pyramid.

Not OP, but I have suspected this but don't know it to be true. I too wonder if there are stats somewhere. I have a 4th, 6th and 8th grade AAP student at SEES and Twain. Each orientation year, out of the Edison pyramid, most of the kids came from Clermont (My kids are from Bushhill and I'm all for the center being put there) but that is only 3 years of observation and I don't know what happend this year, or any of the years before my 8th grader got in. I'd like to know where OP got the info.

Just wondering what the feeling is for people who actually know what the program is like at SEES. I think some people think a strong center can be easily replicated just by opening the doors in another school and putting out the sign saying "AAP center". My impression is that there is a certain momentum that comes with being a center that has a history (i.e. teachers with experience) and a number of teachers at each grade level who can spread out the planning workload. But, I'm interested to hear your opinion since you actually have a stake in this both ways.

(a) I support my base school becoming a center, yes. I'm sorry if it creates a vacuum out of SEES, but do we know it will? And is is possible that could be good for those who remain

(b) I think the feelings are mixed among the SEES community. We love SEES. I think it's an excellent school and my children have thrived there. That said, what we love is the AAP cirriculum. I think my children would thrive in AAP in general. Also, part of what makes SEES great, apart from the teachers is the parents. And the parents will move to Bushhill (at least 1/2 will) so that won't change. The PTA and extracirriculars will be just as great as the parents who implement them will be involved wherever their children are. I know I plan to be. I think you might have a point regarding the teachers but I think that remains to be seen. I also suspect some SEES teacher will be transferred to Bushhill, especially if there is no longer a need for so many at SEES, but even if they don't transfer, I am sure FCPS will make sure a center school is outfitted with quality AAP teachers.

No, actually, they weren’t. They do go to HS at Edison, but because they go to Holmes (and not Twain), they are in the Annandale pyramid. They attend AAP at Belvedere and would not be affected by this.

No, because the middle school dictates the pyramid for the elementary school. Since about 80% of Holmes goes to Annandale (everyone but Bren Mar), Holmes is in the Annandale pyrhamid. And since 100% of Bren Mar goes to Holmes, Bren Mar is in the Annandale pyramid.
