Not OP, but I don't think it's reasonable to assume that someone had help with a downpayment just because they bought a house in DC. Plenty of people buy a condo or townhouse with little down and then roll the equity into a downpayment on the forever home.

No, DW is not from a wealthy family (her parents were both teachers) and nobody helped us with a downpayment.
