We were the same until they passed away. I loved my in-laws and saw them often with/without our kids.

Our daughter and SIL live nearby and my SIL often drops by with our little grandchildren. He knows they love to visit us (plenty of toys!) and he is like a son to us.

Often. In laws help with kids, come to their daytime events and live close to our dental / medical center so I stop in anytime one of them has an appointment or drop one kid off to take another to an appointment. Rarely without kids unless it is to pick something up or drop it off.
Husband goes to my parents often as they have a home Reno business and my husband goes there to build things, borrow tools, etc.

We often visit our adult children separately. We did also when they were in college. Sometimes we both couldn't get off work, sometimes we were combining it with going somewhere else. Sometimes one of us just didn't feel like traveling.

I did once before we were married. Trip was planned for a long time and last minute boyfriend had to work. No way out of it. I could have cancelled the weekend trip, but went anyway. Figured if they were going to be my ILs one day I may as go and get to know them. It's also when I met most of his hometown friends. A little weird. A little weird now when I look back on it, but didn't seem as weird at the time, in my youth.
