If there's one thing you can rely on at DCUM, it's complete ignorance of how functional educational and socioeconomic societies work beyond our borders.

The problem isn't the diversity, although that's a common cry among bigots the world over. The problem is that we don't actually care about reducing child poverty meaningfully in the US, while it's a priority in every other rich country. Just look at how many ugly people on this forum argue against universal healthcare, living wages, and paid maternity leave. These things are directly tied to child poverty rates, but we want nothing of them as long as there's the tiny chance of becoming a billionaire. But stay in your shell. It's nice and warm under that bridge, I'm sure.

Yes, it has. People there are not judged by the location of their children's birthday party.
"We only celebrate" at Edgemoor" people will probably not know the difference between Berlin and Bern

Oh Finland, Finland, Finland: the place where I quite long to be. Your mountains so lofty! Your treetops so tall!

Finland! Finland! Finland! Finland has it all!

no it's not.

Your stupid has just been immortalized on the Internet.

Not Pp but I see no data proving this is accurate in that article...just a statement by someone who has a vested interest in making such a claim.

Got anything else? Because this seems like fakenews.

NP. I'm from Sweden (Finland's neighbor).

Pasi Sahlberg is one of the leading authorities in the ins and outs of the Finnish educational system.

Your ignorance of this or of the broader context in which teaching is seen as an exalted profession in Finland speaks for itself.

I love how the PP says "NP. I'm from Sweden (Finland's neighbor). “ as if it makes them more qualified...or is relevant in some way. You could be from Zimbabwe (not Finland’s neighbor) and the following sentence wouldn’t have changed in the slightest.

Not the Swedish PP, but I feel compelled to defend my European neighbor. It does make a difference. PP knew who he was, and you didn't. European countries close to one another have a common history and are familiar with each other's culture. Her (or his) input was valuable.

I love how Swedish PP felt obligated to add that Sweden and Finland share a border. Sometimes it's hard for us Europeans to plumb the depth of American ignorance, although I grant you that a few on DCUM are well educated. Maybe all the foreigners Joke, joke...

I’m not even the same poster that person was replying too. Why do so many people think they are having one on one conversations on DCUM, it’s baffling. I just felt compelled to point out how irrelevant it is that they are from Sweden...And no, it still doesn’t make a difference just because you said so.

Your investment in the conversation suggests otherwise. Suuure you're not the same person.

+2

My husband is a PhD and research scientist/professor. Prestigious and has tremendous cache; does not pay well.

And I bet they think the peace prize is not a political tool either.

I knew someone would say that. You're right, I meant any NP but the Peace Prize. And in science, given the large number of potential winners, there have been controversies too, for example in the Medicine prize for the discovery of the HIV virus. Ultimately the prize went to the right person, though.
