It is not a fairly safe neighborhood. It is in the heart of Brookland Manor which is low income housing and has a lot of issues with crime.

It's not. Deanwood is east of the river. This was more the Brentwood area.
Who cares? The point is that she was killed in a fairly safe neighborhood. Not that there should be anywhere in DC where someone gets shot for no reason at 3:30 in the afternoon, but it's not like this was somewhere most people would avoid for safety reasons.

It was actually in Brentwood. Yes close to Brookland but not a hot bed of shootings-- Brentwood either for that matter. Children are generally safe in both neighboords.

Here is the link to the Memorial Vigil. They donated their child's organs to save many lives. This is not a policing issue. It's a political issue. We need tougher youth adjudication. There is a consequenceless window from 16-24 in DC that needs to be slammed shut. I'm fine these criminal youth predators (who I do believe lack reasoning and maturity) are being schooled and counseled in the lock up. What they shouldn't be is freed with a pat on the wrist.

OP here. Not to quibble, but I think the mom was the cop. From the article:
"Sydnor’s mother is a 30-year police veteran who has worked as a detective in the homicide unit and is now assigned to the youth division handling sexual abuse cases."
So sad, and ironic in the case of mom's prior work on the homicide unit. I so wish I knew how to address the entrenched crime in the city more effectively.
You can address it by demanding there is not revolving door for adjudicated youth! Post ran an expose this past year on how their crimes take a heavy toll on this city. Look it up and read it! Stupid council members like mcguffin or duffin or whatever his name is love pats on the wrist and, propose paying criminals to not commit crimes. Contact your politicians and tell them you are voting them out if they don't either actually rehabilitate these youth (which means they wouldn't recommit) or give them consequences with teeth. This young lady is someone's precious baby girl. Do something. I'm calling Mary Cheh my rep and in Bounds council member for Wilson tomorrow. This is appalling. Children's lives matter in our city. Her life matters. She was just a young girl a teen looking forward to her next chapter. This is Not acceptable and yes things can be done.

My daughter was on the cheer team when she was the caption; sweet girl and very outgoing. We live EOTP and have younger kids and feel that this could happen to anyone anywhere in DC. Daylight shootings have become the norm it seems like.
