Both William and Harry (who is likely not Charles' biological son) have a very good relationship with Charles and Camilla and Camilla's children. We saw them at Ascot together, and they looked genuinely happy with each other.

You are ridiculous. Prince Philip just retired from his royal duties at age 96 and remains the patron of over 700 charities. If you want to applaud the work of anyone start with him. Or even the Queen who has worked everyday for the last 70 years to help England to her fullest extent.

I always felt that Kate Middleton was someone similar to Diana in some ways. I'm 36 and agree with most of the PPs on her admirable traits. I suspect I feel the same about her that many felt towards Diana. Although the stories are very different indeed.

What exactly is the fascination, beyond title?

I blame Disney for perpetuating the princess myth. They don't do anything except show up and wave although I love their hats.

Diana was OK, what I do not understand is the fascination with the other English royals. They seem like the most useless people on earth.

Because of her parents' terrible divorce. There was cheating on both sides and it deeply scarred her. Diana bought into the fairytale as much as anyone. +1 yes remember we didn't have the internet back then. I remember being in HIGH SCHOOL talking with my girlfriends about what a penis must look like; we all didn't know and couldn't figure out the mechanics of it. My point is, you can't assume she knew about Camilla or that many royals cheat--it was just a different world back then, and as PP said, she "bought into the fairytale as much as anyone." We all did.

And think further back, how JFK was fooling around and the press was hiding it from the public. It is easy for me to believe that Diana was naive, and I suspect it would be hard for my 14 y.o. DD to believe that when hearing the story.

Princess Diana was likely everything you wish you could be. She was beautiful, inside and out. And used her fame to bring attention to many humanitarian efforts.

If you had no real job and you were famous, wouldn't you try to work for worthy causes? Most people probably would. The famous people who are coked out and partying all day are mostly really young and/or horrible, vapid people.

My mother's explanation is that Diana seemed like such a beautiful, refined, gentle person, the perfect princess. This was very very early on, right after she married Charles.

My mother is the type of person who is really into "princesses" and is always talking to my daughter about how she should act like a perfect princess.

I think the whole royalty fascination is total nonsense and I just pretend that I was named after the goddess of the hunt.

She also, unlike commoners Sarah Ferguson and Kate Middleton, born to British nobility and had royal ancestry.
