We stayed at Afnia 50 on recommendation but really didn't like it. Paper thin walls and iffy customer service.

Residence Inns are amazing all around, so that would be a great choice.

We've stayed mostly at the Andaz 5th Avenue because their rooms are clean and clutter-free, the location is fantastic (across from the NY Public Library/Bryant Park/Whole Foods) and the staff really go out of their way to help. Plus they serve above-average wine for their happy hour and you can take your glasses to your room. The downside is that their restaurant is overpriced and not too kid-friendly, but there are so many other places to eat (LPQ, Whole Foods, sushi place across the street, etc.) that we never found it a problem. Last time we had a suite and it was perfect.

+1. Great hotel with good-sized rooms and great location. PP on the Residence Inn on 6th near Bryant Park is also a good one if your price point is slightly lower. That one is also a little better situated with regard to Times Square and Penn Station.

DH and I stayed here once and for whatever reason, got a crazy upgrade to a huge suite. The room had a separate foyer, dining room that sat 10, and a walk in closet the size of a small bedroom.

They also do a princess experience that my friend did for her daughter and the daughter loved it. The room was around $300/night, which isn't cheap, but not bad by NYC standards plus the princess stuff was included.

Last time we stayed here, we also got upgraded. There was also a "prince charming" with a Cinderella hoe walking around. It was a great experience!
We also like the 1 Hotel.
