Not tp get back into the "old money" vs. "new money" debate, but places that wealthy people go are often not what some people think of as "posh." I've heard people describe Pawley's Island as "arrogantly shabby." There really isn't a DC equivalent of the Hamptons, because we don't have the same type of Wall Street/Hedge Fund/Entertainment rich people. Not that there aren't rich people in the DC area, but it's a more muted vibe.

Different people do different things. Some people have vacation homes in the mountains. Some at the beach. In the gay community, it's Lost River, WV and Rehobeth.

I know a number of wealthy Washingtonians with houses in Maine. Mostly in Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor. But these are summer houses, not weekend destinations. And most are family homes.

According to wikipedia "The counties comprising the Eastern Shore are Caroline, Cecil, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester counties."

We aren't super wealthy but have home in Maine and a ski place near Jackson - just where we like to be.

I'm actually one of the Vineyard/Jackson/Kiawah posters -- but I do know a couple of wealthy people who have big horse farms in Rappahannock County. They tend to live out there and keep a place in DC for when they don't want to make the drive.

Sorry, but it's true. I know first hand. People own country homes near Little Washington. Same people own homes in Nantucket and Palm Beach --- but this is their quick getaway.
