I'd look at the Van Ness/Forest Hills area for sure. You can take the Red Line to Dupont easily (which is what I do and it's a 9-minute ride) or hop on the L1 or L2 bus if you live further up Conn Ave. If you like the area and want to stay, the schools are also great.

Not technically 3 bedrooms, but there's enough space that you could carve out some guest space somewhere in there.

As PPs have mentioned, 3 bedrooms are hard to find close-in and if you find one, they will be a lot higher than your budget. Our neighborhood gets mixed reviews from DCUM, but our family loves it here. There are lots of kids here and kid-friendly things to do nearby.

Check out Huckleberry Cheesecake for daycare in DuPont Circle. My kids are older now but I still think it is true that placing a two year old is easier than a baby. That should be walkable to your office.

Depending on how often family will visit and what you need from them (are they staying overnight with your kid while you work or something?), you might want to go with a 2br and just pay for hotel or AirBnB when guests are there.

OP, if I were you, I'd look at a map and familiarize myself with metro stations as a start. I'd suggest, as others have, looking for a 3br house within walking distance of the Brookland, Ft. Totten, Rhode Island Ave., or NoMa metro stations. We live walking distance to the Ft. Totten metro, which is on the same line as Dupont Circle, though your commute would probably be more like 40 minutes door to door (which is quite good for DC! - I think for most of us in this area, a 30 minute commute sounds like a total fantasy!).

For daycare, try the website carelulu.com - they list not only bigger centers, but also small in home day cares that are hard to find otherwise. They also offer "concierge service" in DC, which just means a real human communicates with you to help set up tours and check availability and such.

Yes, no driving for sure because I dont get parking and it is an additional 250 a month so Ill stick to public transport

I do realize the housing is different here and the rents are much higher too but so excited about this gorgeous area we will make it all work

I would look for an apartment or condo (or small SFH) in MOCO near White Flint, Rockville or Kensington. If you are looking for a Metro commute, going all the way around the red line makes no sense.

Do you have a car? I know it's not ideal but for that budget I think what I would do is rent a rowhouse in Bloomingdale and drive/park in Dupont:

Alternatively you could do public transit but you're probably looking at more like 40 min door to door, depending on your exact office location (Bloomingdale is close-in geographically, but nowhere near a metro so you have to budget in a 15 min walk to metro or take the bus).

You can find lots of daycares along the way or in Dupont, although you probably will have a waitlist to deal with, unfortunately.

a lot of folks use nanny shares since child care in DC is hard to get into and will likely cost you at least $1500 a month for that age. The upside is free preschool in another year if you live in DC
