We looked at a beautiful house near maple (south of Whole Foods) and decided to pass. There's A LOT of foot traffic on the streets around maple. A little too much for me to feel comfortable with teens and tweens home during the summer.
There are a handful of homeless that wander around maple and the surrounding areas.
We've lived in the Vienna/Oakton area for 20 years.
Do you mind sharing more info on where you live and what you can walk to? Thanks!
Chipotle, Starbucks, tropical smoothie, nottoway park, Oakton library. All sidewalks.

We live in 22181, just outside the town line.

DP here. Have also lived in both and much prefer McLean.
PP who prefers Virginia. Other than commute to DC, what do you like better?
Whoops. Meant Vienna. Sorry.
It's less congested. I think the residential neighborhoods are prettier. It's easier to get to Metro than it was from our Vienna neighborhood. People and schools seem less sports-obsessed and more interested in a wider variety of topics. Langley HS people are less snooty vis-a-vis McLean HS than Madison HS people were vis-a-vis Marshall HS. There's no divide comparable to that between Town of Vienna residents and county residents with Vienna addresses.
I do miss the greater retail variety in Vienna and the W&OD trail On the other thing, some other things in Vienna have McLean equivalents (Viva Vienna = McLean Day; VYI = MYB; Vienna Woods/Cardinal Hill = Tuckahoe/Chesterbook, etc.).
Interesting. I didn't like McLean at all. I am not from around here and found the people to be challenging. Vienna has a much more welcoming feel.

We like the area near Nottoway park -- just outside the Town of Vienna tax zone, but close to the park and metro and High Schools. There are some new 1.4mil houses right across from the park on Courthouse. We walk in the park regularly and have meant to go to the Thursday night music performances in the summer. There are always sports teams playing there -- soccer, baseball, football, volleyball, tennis (for adults and kids). People always out walking their dogs. Pick up basketball games. It doesn't have a great playground, but those new houses are right next to the VFW lodge and they have a nice playground.
Those houses do not have big lots, but I think they all back to trees. Might be something to consider if there are any still left. This area is zoned for Thoreau MS and Madison HS. The elem. is Marshall Rd, but the AAP center (G/T) is Mosby Woods (9 on Great Schools).
Here is the address of one unit. 2692 Salem Oak Ln
Vienna, VA 22181 The development is called Vienna Grove : http://www.christophercompanies.com/communities/vienna-grove/
This area is very close to the high school without being right on top of it.
I think the only people who care about being in town or out of town are those who pay the extra taxes for being in the town of Vienna.

Live here long enough, though, and you quickly figure out the three spots where there's always a speed trap (Lawyers and Colin, in front of the daycare behind old Magruders, across from seventh Day Adventist Church)
But, there are also responsive. I work in ToV and have seen them in action. Called the non emergency line and they were great.
