As someone who is not a professional actor but has appeared a handful of times in paid productions, acting for most devoted actors is a passion. An addicting passion. For the vast majority of entertainment professionals, they love what they do with a passion. The art of acting, singing, dancing, performing is in their blood. There are millions of people trying to become professionals and only a small percentage of them will get the opportunity to perform their chosen profession. If you want to be more than a one trick pony, then you'll need to work at it. There are far fewer opportunities than there are very talented performers. You have to be talented, driven and dedicated to make it. If you aren't, you'll get discarded quickly. Even those who burn out early, usually come back due to the passion. It's hard to walk away from the biz. I stopped performing locally when we had kids, just didn't have time for it. But I go to see friends' productions and you immediately fall back into the "Oooh....would love to play X character" or feel that itch to perform again...then you remember how much work and time it takes.

For those who think it's not hard work, you really should try it. Even try a local community theater or a local independent film. I've been told many times by people who work behind the camera or work in tech jobs that it looks so easy...then they try it and realize that it isn't as easy as it looks. To be good, you need to work hard at it. It takes time, commitment, memorization. Even those who think that singing professionally is easy, it isn't as easy as it looks/seems.

Acting is 99% rejection yet attracts people with a tremendous need for acceptance. It's an ego stroke. Or they know nothing else. If Mick Jagger was not up there gyrating, he would be lost.
