Does Sabrina count? There is some wealth discrepancy there, but when she comes back from Paris, she's in a new class. Seems like she doesn't strive for the one brother bc of his wealth (yes, because of the imagined glamour).

It's Audrey Hepburn in her most calm/secure-personality role.

Musicals:
Sound of music (I know the wealth thing... but Maria is a vibrant and secure, but searching, character.)
Music man - Marian seems to do just fine single and doesn't seem to date harold(?) for any desperate reason

That age is good for musicals. But I'm trying to think of more classic musicals that have independent women.

I think 'Working Girl' is actually an excellent portrayal of a woman using her cleverness to advance. Might be a little maybe for your DD, though.

Contact (the Jodie Foster movie). She plays a scientist who happens to be a woman - and Matthew McConenugh (sp) plays the emotionally supportive eye candy.

Bend It Like Beckham

Ugh, as a female soccer player, I HATE this movie. The lead actress has a body that doesn't look like it's ever played sports, let alone soccer, and she has a wildly inappropriate relationship with her coach. Nobody in this film plays soccer and plus, why should she bend it like Beckham instead of Mia Hamm? Why a male idol?? Skip this crap.

Maybe because it takes place in England?

And the movie came out before Mia Hamm was a role model, i think.

Also, why can't you want to emulate a man? DO all girls role models need to be women?

No, it didn't.
