Funny you ask. They found out unintentionally pretty early in the relationship, and while I don't have all of the details, dad made it pretty clear to my son that they were opposed to the relationship. They have continued nevertheless - I have no idea what the daughter is or is not telling her parents.

It's a tribal and old fashioned culture but if she marries him they will play nice. No family wants a divorced daughter. He's in a much better position than a woman.

I'm not Asian, but my experience with south Asian men is that they tend to be sexist or at least old-fashioned in a way that doesn't work for me. Also, many of the ones I know are in IT, so they also have personalities that are not often what I look for. Of course my sample size is too small.


It's a patriarchal culture and the ones in it are usually immigrants.

The first American generation is coming into their late 40s and have varied professional careers. The ones born in the us aren't as awkward or seemingly dorky. Additionally most it indians are from the south - this is not the region from where conventionally attractive south Asians are from


The 2nd generation too is pretty sexist from what I observe. In fact, some of the parents here raise their kids to adhere even more strongly to the culture they left behind so the patriarchy kinda persists not explicitly but implicitly.

Ok, stupid question, what do you mean a "desi guy"? How is that different from any other Indian American guy?


It's a term used by south asians meaning of our homeland i.e. Indian or Pakistani or Bengali.


Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan. Bengalis usually are from West Bangal (India) and Bangladesh. Punjabis are usually from Punjab (India) and Punjab (Pakistan). Tamils usually are from Tamilnadu (India) and Sri Lanka. It is all a mishmash now because how the population has continued to migrate.

I am a south asian immigrant mom of a girl and a boy. I guess my kids are "American Desis". They will end up with whoever they choose to end up with. We gave up the right to dictate that they marry people from India belonging to a particular state, a particular caste or a particular religion when we migrated from India to make our home in the US. I also believe that you are attracted to who you are attracted to. It can be any religion, color, race, ethnicity or gender. As long as my kids are happy, I am happy. Being American should teach us that, amirite?

Forgot to mention - he'll probably even get help financially for weddings and houses - so there's that as well. Free babysitting for the kids etc - so there are some perks.

those are south East Asians - South Asia is Indian Pakistan Bangladesh sir lanka and Nepal
