Northam is so conservative, though, that he's been courted many times by the Republican Party to switch sides. He did not really come out against Trump the way Perriello has from the beginning.

Northam is ex-military, and that makes Rs salivate, especially when their own party is such a horror show. Northam is not one of theirs. And the fact that he voted for Bush (also a horror show) more than ten years ago and admitted it should tell you something about his learning curve and his integrity.
I don't think Virginia is every going to have a governor who's as liberal as I am. But I think we can have a strongly principled one with experience handling practical matters, and that's not Perriello.
