My own mother permed my hair starting when I was 2 years old. It was the early 80's after all. My hair was a ridiculous, frizzy mess from about age 2-6. She gave not a thought to the chemicals, and even permed her own hair while pregnant.

My mother got her first perm when she was 18 months old. My grandmother even took a picture of it and put it in her baby book! I also had perms all through elementary school. Seems crazy now.

It's also rude to the other clients. We don't want to hear a crying baby, unless it is a family place like Great Clips or Hair Cuttery. Don't bring your kids to the salon. I had to get a sitter, too.

OP here. I'm sure the DCUM world will get a kick out of this but I actually wanted to get a straight perm. Asian women sometimes straight perm their already straight hair to get it silky straight. My hair is naturally kind of frizzy. I had not gotten my hair done for almost a year so I was long overdue.

Glad you got a sitter. Please don't consider bringing your kid again. You have no idea when your kid is going to need you. A 2-3 hour stretch is a long time. My stylist would drop me like a hot potato if I did something that. It's disrespectful to the stylist.

Have a friend bring over a Lilt box kit & she can do it in the kitchen like it was 1981.

Geez, What is it with all of the perm haters and jokes about the 80's. I just got a body perm post-baby. I NEEDED it. My hair is straight and very fine to begin with, but once it started falling out because of the change in hormones post-baby I thought I as going to be bald. My hair looked horrible. The perm provided me with some body to cover up the thinning. It looks SO MUCH BETTER.

FWIW, I brought my 3-month-old baby. The chemicals aren't nearly as toxic or smelly as the 80's, but to be on the safe side, I the baby in his carrier just outside the room where he slept most of the time.

Yeah. I'm surprised people don't know this. Perm just means permanent (which it's not....) but the term is used for any chemical texture treatment. Also, agree w/ PP that none of you know any black people and it's obvious.
