-- People were saying a WMS kid DIED from an OD. Not true.
-- No one in APS says there's a rampant problem -- the justification for the dogs was a "national" uptick in drug use.
-- WMS principal says this is limited to a few known kids.

So, really, let's have a serious conversation about it. But people need to stop with the exaggerations.

Your first problem is that you believe what the WMS Principal tells you. It's her watch.

Also, you don't know the 1/2 of the current drug problem at WMS/YHS. It's not something they wanted public and families involved are playing it close to the chest.

When you get to the point of faculty alerting authorities (whistle blowing) and police dogs doing raids ---it's real.

I don't judge parents who have to make heartbreaking decisions. I do judge parents who refuse to believe it could be real b/c they haven't seen it with their own eyes. Freakin' idiots!

Sadly, this is true in a lot of instances. They hide it. Whatever it takes - going to a program, lawyers, whatever. The parents want to save THEIR rep, so they cover for Larlo.

Truthfully, it happens to decent people. These are minors (or few 18-year old Seniors). If the parents are protecting their kids and focusing on getting them treatment/help they don't need the publicity/busy-bodies around them. They want their kids to go on to lead productive lives without a huge blemish from a mistake they made as a kid. Trust me, parents are in crisis mode if they discover this for the first time. They are turning inward and fixing their family problems (at least the ones who OD or had serious issues). Looking up treatment centers, etc. I don't judge parents in that heart-breaking situation at all. If their kid was the dealer with a history of trouble--that is different.

I do judge a school system if they are seeing a repeated problem for not taking an aggressive stand. Hopefully, that is what they are now forced to do.

Look, the severe overcrowding is directly tied in with this. The administration can't keep their thumb on things due to numbers. I have had friends at MS in Arlington be highly unsatisfied when they meet with school officials over incidents (these weren't drug--other problems fairly serious as well) that from meeting to meeting they didn't have a clear grasp of what students were involved, who they were---they'd forget from meeting to meeting.

All of this burns up so much with dumbsh*t Murphy, the dumb*ss school board members and some active parents who believe any of the sh*t they tell them that over-crowded, super-sized schools aren't a problem. They ARE both academically and socially.

Yep. Had to try really hard not to say something rude to the parent who claimed this search "creates a hostile environment for our kids". But apparently drug dealers in the parking lot, kids OD'ing is just peachy as long as you don't have to hear about it.

I would add many of these parents had their kids late in life and by the time they reach MS/HS they are old and tired. Just when they should be stepping up the parenting game the most--they are too tired and johnny is such a good kid they don't have to worry anyways.

MS through HS it should be a damn police state in your house. Going through their stuff (they are still minors) when they aren't home, monitoring texts/social media, keeping abreast of the vernacular, knowing who they are hanging out with, checking up when they say they will be at so-and-sos, etc. A truly crafty teen can get away with a lot of sh*t, but at least you can minimize the damage.

Also--scared straight works. My dad used to basically tell us one hit of heroin and you will be completely addicted, eventually die, etc. We saw prison documentaries---what happens when you go to jail, etc. You empower kids. You don't whine and cry --oh we can't have a police state at our schools. Bullsh*t. Drug raids were common even at my UMC HS.

Also--shipping your kid off to private doesn't solve everything. Experience tells me more $ and more privilege sometimes leads to even more abuse.

Lady, when the faculty is fed up with the amount of drugs at school and reports it---it's a little hard to cry it's all made up.

Same here. Are you effing kidding me? How is it a hostile environment to have dogs search when the kids have been warned and it is apparently happening when they aren't even there, but seeing drug use in the bathroom and having ambulances arrive at school isn't?

But a kid did OD, recently. Just b/c part of the statement was false doesn't negate the whole thing. Also, if enough kids are talking about the drugs at HT, don't you think there might be some truth to it?

We are talking about MS kids here. I don't care if "arrested" is the wrong term when what they really meant was that police officers went into the school and removed students. That sure as heck better seem like getting arrested to my kids when they get to that age. Splitting hairs like this is just for those that are delusional.

I think the point being made -- and it was a good one -- is that some things have been exaggerated. On Arlnow, for example, one person was saying some kid at WMS died of an OD. Never happened. There's also some rumor being stated as fact that drugs are dealt out the back of Harris Teeter, but no evidence to support it. Another said something about a bunch of kids being arrested this week but then backed off when someone said they'd check with the police about that (as that would be public record).
