I never thought Johnny seemed believable as being in love with Baby. Maybe it was just me?


He wasn't in love with her. He was having fun doing a rich, young, wide-eyed impressionable girl for the summer, that's all. Then it turned out she taught him some things about the type of person he wanted to become....



In the original? I didn't get that impression. Neither character were using each other. The summer relationship was perspective changing for both of them in different ways.

I liked Patrick Swayze, but I never bought that his character was in love with Jennifer Grey's character during the movie. The tensions of making the movie revealed after the theatrical release led me to believe that he couldn't get past his personal annoyance with Grey b/c of her inability to dance and that came across in the on screen chemistry.

Aye, there's the rub He was a professional dancer who was also an actor. (He couldn’t pull off the most intellectual roles, but he had his niche.) Jennifer Grey as an actress was a perfect choice for Baby. She wasn’t a total clod, but she wasn’t a professional dancer.

It’s probably similar to the conflicts Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds faced on Singing in the Rain and probably why they included a dream sequence with he and Cyd Charisse, a professional dancer. The only movie that I’ve ever seen where they passed off the awkward duckling turned swan dancer was Strictly Ballroom. If a dancer is cast—they either can’t act and/or they can’t act like a novice dancer.

I did not watch the remake. The second I saw who was cast as Baby I knew it wouldn't be good and I don't want to tarnish my beautiful memories. The Footloose remake was good - it was like a love letter to the original. This would have been painful to watch.

Funny story. I was actually at college near the location where Dirty Dancing was filmed. I remember some of the girls that I knew getting so excited about going over to watch the filming and maybe get the opportunity to be an extra in the movie. I could not have been less interested.

Now when I look at Patrick Swayze...swoon. I could have seen him making at least some of these scenes if I had played my cards right. Darn it!

At the end of the big dancing scene it cuts to Baby watching the movie in a theater, looking older and a bit tired but with a full face of makeup and an Ann Taylor wrap dress. Johnny comes up to her and they have a super awkward reunion chat where she compliments him on his success with the film and he thanks her for inspiring him to go for his dream Broadway career. Then her husband and daughter come out and they both continue to look at each other awkwardly.
